How to configure a TP-Link Router TL-WR841ND

- If you're losing connection every 2 minutes, obey step 5 -

1. Plug the included LAN cable into the blue socket on the router and into the socket on the wall. You can plug your laptop/PC into the yellow socket. You do not need the attached CD!

2. If you want to connect your laptop/PC via WLAN, switch on the router and wait a few seconds until a WLAN network is displayed on your laptop/PC. In the factory settings the network is called "TP-LINK_xxxxxxxx". You will find the password on the back of the router.

3. When you are connected, open your browser and go to the page "http://192.168.0.1" or "http://192.168.1.1" (only one page works). The login is "admin/admin". You should now see the router's welcome page.

4. First click on "WLAN" or "wireless" on the right side and in the sub-tab on "WLAN/wireless advanced". Set the Transmit Power to Medium and click on save/speichern.

5. Next click on "Security" on the right side and in the sub-tab on "Advanced Security". This step is very important, because it sets the firewall of your router (otherwise you have to log in every two minutes). For the options "Forbid/Ignore Ping Packet From WAN Port" and "Forbid/Ignore Ping Packet From LAN-Port" you have to uncheck both options! Save this change as well.
   Note: If you have a different router model, the option may not be called "Forbid Ping From WAN Port", but "Enable Ping From WAN Port". In this case you must of course check the box.

6. Now click on "Quick Setup" on the right side.

7. First of all you have to click on "next". Then set the Connection Type to "dynamic IP". The next options may differ depending on the model and firmware. If you are asked if you want to clone the MAC address, then click on "No". In the WLAN settings you have to change the network name (SSID) to your room number. If available, you have to change your region to "Germany".

8. You should change the WLAN password! We recommend using a secure password and sufficient encryption (WPA2-PSK only). The password should contain letters, numbers, special characters and at least 8 characters.

9. Click on Save and wait until all changes have been saved.

10. Then restart the router once. Now you have to connect to the new WLAN (your room number) and then log in on the login page.

 

A big advantage of the router is that you don't have to log in again and again after a restart of the computer and that you can use your mobile phone/tablet connected to the WLAN.
